Junior placements cap stellar season
Last modified on 2009-06-03 17:54:17 GMT . .

Titans Junior B team closed out another successful season, not just on the ice, but with players continuing their career at a higher level.  The Junior’s ended their season with a trip to the USA Hockey Junior Nationals in Marlborough, MA.  Though a few of the players had been there before, for most of the group it was their first trip to the National Tournament and proved to be an experience that all players will certainly draw from and remember as they move forward in their hockey careers.  For some it would be their last wearing of the Junior Titans jersey, as many players from this year’s squad would be moving on to clubs at the Junior A level or onto college programs.

The Titans had a hard fought and exciting playoff run, in which the team won 5 of 6 overtime games on their way to Nationals.   The Titans defeated the NJ Rockets in the first round of the MJHL playoffs.  In the second round best of three series, the Titans gave eventual National Champion Suffolk PAL all they could handle and qualified for the wild card “play-in” series to determine the leagues final bid to Nationals.  Facing off against the Hartford Jr. Wolfpack in an elimination game the Titans kept their season alive on another overtime goal.

This win set up a showdown against the MJHL South Champion Hampton Roads Whalers that ended in dramatic fashion as the Titans, trailing by a goal scored twice in the final 30 seconds of the 3rd period to prevail and earn the fifth and final seed to Nationals.

At the National Tournament the team would face some very good competition against the Keegan Cup Champion Central Penn Panthers, the CHA Champion - Mass Maple Leafs, and the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins, working only with a day’s rest and going 0-2-1 in round robin play which was not enough to advance to the semi final round.  This ended the Junior teams tremendous playoff run which provided exciting hockey, culminating in (9) players receiving Junior A commitments and (2) players going directly to college programs.

The Junior Titans are very proud to announce the following player commitments for the 2009/2010 season:

Junior A Commitments

Jesse Krauss—Hartford Wolfpack  - (AJHL)

Bobby Deatrick –committed to New Hampshire Monarchs for the 2010-2011 season. - (EJHL)

College Commitments

Casey Jouaneau—University of Delaware
Chris Swan—Hobart College

In addition,  former Captain Ryan Elsbree will continue his career with the Titans as an assistant coach in our Jr. program.

Congratulations to Head Coach Dustin Deplama and Assitant Rich Haviland, and to all the players.  Best of luck to the young men continuing their hockey careers!

England 2009
Last modified on 2009-04-01 14:24:00 GMT . .

Come play Hockey in Jolly Ole’ England!!  July 15th – July 22nd 2009

The Titans have been invited to England.  The Sheffield Scimitars have invited us over to England to play some Hockey and make some friends.  We’re still finalizing the details, but we’ll play 4 games against teams from England and Wales.  There will be a stay in London to see the sites and possibly other excursions if we want.

Some of the tentative details are as follows… (Subject to change of course, as we get the teams on Board.)

-    We will be taking 2 teams, a Pee Wee and Squirt team.
-    We’ll fly into London and take a bus up to Sheffield England.
-    Stay in Sheffield for 5 or 6 days and play at least 3 games.
-    Get a bus back to the London area and  play one of the London teams
-    Stay in London over night and sight see
-    Fly back home

The cost should run around $1500 per person (give or take as we are at the mercy of the airlines until we book).  This will include the flights, transport in England, Hotels, Team Jersey, and at least 4 games.  This may vary on family size due to the hotel rules in England and if we add other excursions to the itinerary.

If you’re interested please contact me at rob.gravina@hds.com  or 917-868-5894

Thank you,
Rob Gravina

Jr. Titans Lock up 5th Seed to Nationals
Last modified on 2009-03-25 15:13:55 GMT . .

A thriller comes down to the wire in Hackensack, NJ
March 24, 2009

It was the wildest of wild card races as the New Jersey Jr. Titans picked up the 5th and final seed to the Jr. B National Tournament. After losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs to Suffolk PAL, the Jr. Titans turned it around in the USA National Play-In tournament.

In the Semi-Final Play-In game they defeated the Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack in overtime to advance to the Championship game.  There they took on the Hampton Roads Jr. Whalers, who just upset the #1 Valley Forge Minutemen.

The Jr. Whalers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead.  It wasn’t until the 12 minute mark of the 2nd period when the Jr. Titans got on the board.  Ryan Elsbree dished the puck over to Thomas Tirro who was sitting on the back door and buried the puck past the Hampton Roads goaltender.

“Before the game our goal was to set the tempo and pace, but the Jr. Whalers are a very skilled team and really took the play to us early on,” said Jr. Titans head coach, Dustin DePalma. We made some adjustments to counter their speed and our boys responded very well to the challenge.”

The Jr. Titans scored 3 unanswered goals in the 2nd period until the :42 second mark, when the Jr. Whalers tied it at 3.  The late goal gave the Jr. Whalers the spark they needed heading into the 3rd period.

The Jr. Whalers played a solid period but couldn’t finish on a bunch of scoring opportunities.  That was until Charles Spiller gave Hampton Roads the lead with 4:50 to go in the game.  Jonathon Maas took a low shot from the left circle.  The rebound kicked out to the right where Spiller was heading hard to the net.  While being hooked to the ice he made a diving play at the puck and buried the goal while falling to the ice.

With under 2 minutes to play, penalties started to fill the board.  The Jr. Titans had a 4 on 3 power play with under one minute remaining.  With 32 seconds left in regulation, Timothy Higgins scored on a rebound that started with a shot from the point. There was a scramble for the loose puck in front of the net in which Higgins found and buried.

So they headed to overtime…or did they?  As the teams remained 4 on 4 for the final 32 seconds, Jesse Krauss chipped the puck past a pinching Jr. Whalers defensemen.  Heading down on a one on one, he sauced the puck to a sprinting Timmy Clifton coming down the right wing.  Clifton roofed the shot into the top corner of the net with 2.9 seconds to go in regulation.

“I think after we scored the tying goal our boys really fed off the energy,” explained DePalma.  “We have played a lot of overtime hockey throughout the playoffs, and have shown confidence when faced with pressure situations. Someone has always seemed to step up and make a play when we needed it.  This time it was Jesse Krauss and Tim Clifton.”

The Jr. Titans scored two goals in the last 32 seconds of the game to win the Play-In championship and keep their dreams alive of winning the Jr. B National Championship.

Extended Season Teams
Last modified on 2009-03-02 16:08:49 GMT . .

Its time for the Extended Season to start.  For those that signed up there is one practice/clinic per week.  This coming week the times are:

Monday    March 2    5:30 PM - 6:30 PM    Squirt/mite (’99s and younger)

Tuesday    March 3    7:45 PM - 8:45 PM PeeWee  (’97,98)

We have asked the rink to keep these times consistent throughout the 8 weeks.

Teams have been balanced out to the best of our ability.  While some of you suggested teams, most came in ‘at-large’ and we felt it best to balance out the talent for the most competitive action.  Rosters here. All teams play at the same time in a cross ice format, so there is one game slot per level.

5:45pm -Squirt/mite (’99s and younger)
7:00pm -PeeWee  (’97,98)
