HOWELL TWP APPROVAL PAVES WAY FOR NEW ICE RINK
Howell IceWorld Coming to Howell. NJ Titans Club to have new home.

The Howell Township Board voted this evening to allow a family-friendly ice rink to open in the Fall of 2010. The facility to be named Howell IceWorld will be home to the NJ Junior Titan’s youth, midget and junior travel hockey teams. Howell IceWorld, will also host public and figure skating, birthday parties, youth leagues (including, elementary, middle school and high school hockey), learn to skate, and adult hockey leagues. It promises to be a safe, family-friendly entertainment center bringing value to the people of Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex counties. The 42,000 square foot facility, scheduled to open in September 2010, will be the first new ice arena in the county in over 20 years. It will feature a full NHL sized rink in addition to a mini rink, plus a synthetic ice-training center located on County Rt. 524 near Exit 31 on Interstate 195.

Managing Partner Glenn Adamo, a lifelong hockey devotee said, “We are pleased that the Howell Board looked favorably on our application tonight. Having the NJ Titans club make their home with us in a modern family-friendly ice center was a key decision in moving forward with this project. We want this to be a place that serves the needs of the community while also celebrating the great game of ice hockey. The NJ Titans have shown great success in developing student-athletes at all levels so getting the Haviland family involved in the project adds significant credibility to the hockey experience. Ice Hockey in this area is exploding and there is tremendous demand for a modern state of the art facility”. The Junior Titans, members of the Atlantic Youth Hockey League and the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League, have played at the Gold Coast Arena in Wall Township NJ for the past five seasons after moving from Middlesex County in 2005.

George Haviland is a partner in the rink and principal owner of the NJ Titans. “It is amazing what we have been able to accomplish without our own facility. We know that going forward our membership will realize tremendous benefits skating in our new home. We will have private dressing rooms exclusively for Titan players, provide better value to families, access to the SuperSkills Training Center as well as more convenient practice and game times. We can increase the number of skaters in our club and move more players to high school, college hockey and beyond.”

Scott Casuccio, the complex’s developer, “I have formed a great relationship with George and the group and know how important it is to have this project completed on schedule for the kids. I look forward to a long and beneficial relationship “.

…………………………………………………………………………………….A fitting tribute
Last modified on 2010-02-15 15:24:50 GMT . .

In the 36th game of the year, a day after suffering their worst defeat of the season, 16 boys and three coaches took part in something very special… something much more than just another Sunday morning hockey game. As they gathered in blue rink locker room #4, the Pee Wee Gibbons team somberly dealt with the sad news of the unexpected death of Coach Gibby’s father the day before. While Coach Barr and Coach Ziegler placed black bands on each of the players’ left arms, Coach Gibby walked through the door, inspiring the team with his presence at such a difficult time. And in one of those rare storybook endings, the boys responded with their flat-out best effort of the season–a stunning and dramatic 3-2 victory over the Toms River Blackhawks. Indeed, it was no ordinary victory. This same Toms River team had already beaten the Titans twice during the season and had won the Thanksgiving tournament in Delaware where our guys had also participated. Add to that, they are a team bound for the playoffs in the NJYHL.

But for this Sunday morning, the game belonged to the NJ Jr. Titans. They played together as a team and as befitting for Valentine’s Day, every team member played his heart out. They checked, they passed the puck, they played defense, and they scored. They killed off five penalties, including a four-minute power play for the Blackhawks and a minute and four seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage in the third period. And they held on for the last minute of the game when Toms River pulled their goalie for a 6-on-5 skating advantage. On a day where there were 16 heroes, none stood taller than goalie #30 Brian H., who made 16 saves, many of them spectacular, but none more than the 4-on-0 breakaway stuff with two minutes left in the game. Leading the charge offensively was #84 Patrick Q. who scored twice, once assisted by #45 Noah Z. and unassisted on the game-winning tally. Defenseman #9 Chris P. netted the other Titan goal on a screen shot from the left point.

There are rare moments in sports when sometimes the event transcends the game. The Pee Wee Gibbons team experienced one of those moments on Sunday. Rest in peace James Gibbons.

Tim Higgins featured in USA Junior Hockey Magazine

by Steve Stein for the November 2009 edition

New Jersey Junior Titans team captain Tim Higgins has been given his marching orders by head coach Dustin DePalma.

“Coach wants me to be tough on the team, to make sure our practices are more physical and harder than our games,” Higgins said. “After all, you play the way you practice.” The 6-foot, 175-pound left wing grinder has gladly accepted the leadership role. He’s never been a captain – or assistant captain – in his hockey career, but he’s always wanted to wear a “C” or “A” on his sweater.

“The best way to be a leader,” he said, “is to work hard.” DePalma is confident that Higgins, 19, can handle the captain’s duties.

“Tim epitomizes what our program is all about,” DePalma said. “He has many good qualities.” This is Higgins’ second year with the Junior Titans. He helped the team earn a berth in the Junior B national tournament last season.

Higgins said he decided to play junior hockey after a four-year career at Manasquan (N.J.) High School because he thought it would be the best path to his ultimate goal of playing college hockey.

“When I graduated from high school, I didn’t know if I was ready for college hockey,” he said. “I am now.” This will be Higgins’ final season with the Junior B level Junior Titans. If he doesn’t play in college next year, Higgins said, he’d like to play Junior A hockey.

Higgins is taking classes at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., focusing on criminal justice, while he plays for the Junior Titans.
